In what could have been a battle of seasoned quarterbacks, the Music City Bowl will now feature a pair of freshmen trying to prove themselves under center when Iowa and Kentucky meet on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
Third-stringer Joe Labas will draw the start for the Hawkeyes (7-5) after starter Spencer Petras underwent shoulder surgery and backup Alex Padilla entered the transfer portal
Destin Wade likely will get the nod for the Wildcats (7-5), although Deuce Hogan and Kaiya Sheron are also expected to take snaps.
"I called my parents right away, and they were happy for me and excited, and I was excited for the opportunity," Labas said. "It was kind of like a shock at first, like it would be for anyone.
Labas will look to jumpstart an Iowa offense that averaged just 17.4 points per game in the regular season.
"We've added some stuff to the playbook that we haven't ran ever," Labas said. "It's pretty good. I feel very confident about it, and I'm excited about it."
The Hawkeyes have leaned heavily on their defense, which ranks among the best in the nation with an average of just 14.4 points conceded per game. That unit is headlined by linebacker Jack Campbell, who was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year after recording a team-high 118 tackles (52 solo, 66 assists) and two interceptions.
Those statistics aren't a welcome sight for a Kentucky team that will be without two of its most important offensive weapons.
Starting quarterback Will Levis (2,406 passing yards, 19 TDs, 10 interceptions) and running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. (175 carries, 904 yards, six TDs) have both opted to sit out as they prepare for the NFL draft.
Despite those absences, the Wildcats are confident that they can win their fifth consecutive bowl game, a streak that includes a 20-17 victory over Iowa in last season's Citrus Bowl.
"Everybody who's in that room playing in that bowl game wants to be there," Kentucky offensive lineman Kenneth Horsey said. "There's no guys thinking about leaving, there's no more worrying about the future, there's no more looking about the past.
"Everybody in there right now is 100 percent committed to making sure that the University of Kentucky is ready to go and we can win this bowl game."
One of those players whose commitment is on full display is linebacker Jordan Wright, who, despite declaring for the draft, will still play in the Music City Bowl. Wright made 58 tackles this season, including 8.5 for loss, and also had a sack and an interception.
The Wildcats will be appearing in their second Music City Bowl under head coach Mark Stoops and their fifth since 2006. Iowa was supposed to appear in the Music City Bowl in 2020, but the event was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
Prior to last season's loss in the Citrus Bowl, the Hawkeyes had won three straight bowl games. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is 9-9 in bowl games, and a win on Saturday would tie him with Penn State's Joe Paterno for the most bowl victories by a Big Ten coach.

Alabama fell short of its annual expectation of being in the College Football Playoff.
Kansas State exceeded all expectations by winning the Big 12 championship.
The No. 5 Crimson Tide (10-2) and the No. 9 Wildcats (10-3) enter the Sugar Bowl on Saturday afternoon from different perspectives, but both teams say that being a warm-up for the CFP doesn't diminish the importance of their game in New Orleans.
"This is not something that is not important to us," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "We have a lot that we can prove in this game."
The Tide and the Wildcats kick off ahead of the CFP semifinal clashes as No. 3 TCU plays No. 2 Michigan and No. 4 Ohio State challenges No. 1 Georgia.
Alabama, which was ranked No. 1 in the AP preseason poll, can show that perhaps it should have been included in the playoff on Saturday. The Tide's losses both came on the final play of the game against Tennessee and LSU, both of which were highly ranked at the time.
"It hasn't gone as we wanted to this season," running back Jahmyr Gibbs said. "So, we're trying to finish the season off right."
Quarterback Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, and star defender Will Anderson have said they will play in the Sugar Bowl, but 15 Alabama players have entered the transfer portal, per 247Sports.
Five of the departing players are offensive linemen and five more are wide receivers, leaving the Tide thin at those spots.
"We're going to play a really good team that plays sort of old-fashioned, tough, very disciplined, well-coached," Saban said. "So there's not any way to make it easy to prepare for a team like that."
Kansas State was unranked to start the season and didn't enter the rankings until after it improved to 3-1 with a 41-34 victory at Oklahoma on Sept. 24. But it has remained ranked ever since and secured the Sugar Bowl berth with a 31-28 overtime victory against previously unbeaten TCU in the Big 12 title game Dec. 3.
"It didn't even feel real for the first few days," offensive lineman Hayden Gillum said. "It's a surreal feeling and it's special but we've got a great opportunity coming up and we're gonna make the most of it, too."
The Wildcats have not had any opt-outs and star running back Deuce Vaughn said he won't decide about whether to leave early for the NFL until after the Sugar Bowl.
"The Sugar Bowl has been a game that I've wanted to play in since I was a little kid," Vaughn said. "Everybody wants to finish the thing the right way."
Alabama is favored by nearly a touchdown, but Kansas State has exceeded expectations all season.
"People are saying (the Tide) are having a down year for them and the fact that it's a down year and they're still ranked No. 5 tells you enough about Alabama," Wildcats quarterback Will Howard said. "We get to measure ourselves against the best and we feel like we're one of the best too."

Michigan finds itself in the same spot as last year's bowl season - preparing for the College Football Playoff semifinals. The No. 2 Wolverines will have a very different opponent as they attempt to advance to the title game.
They were bullied by Georgia's uber-talented defense in the Orange Bowl a year ago, losing 34-11. At the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Eve this year, they're more concerned about No. 3 TCU's high-powered offense, engineered by the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
The survivor of the semifinal game in Glendale, Ariz. will advance to face the Georgia-Ohio State victor in the national championship game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Jan. 9.
TCU's Max Duggan, who recently declared he'll enter his name in the NFL draft, passed for 3,321 yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions this season. He added six rushing touchdowns as the Horned Frogs (12-1) remained undefeated until an overtime loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh labels TCU's offense a "scoring machine" with Duggan at the controls.
"Nothing but tremendous respect for the type of competitor that he is. And it's going to be a huge challenge getting ready for a quarterback like that," Harbaugh said.
TCU averages 40.3 points per game, sixth-best in the nation. While Duggan spreads the ball around, the Horned Frogs have relied upon Kendre Miller in the running game. He's rushed for 1,342 yards and 17 touchdowns.
"They're just balanced with the pass and a running game," Wolverines linebacker Michael Barrett said. "They're really good at both. It's going to be a good test for our defense on all levels."
Horned Frogs Sonny Dykes knows that if his team prevails, it will likely be a high-scoring affair.
"One thing that we have to do is rely on our strengths, which is speed and the ability to get the ball down the field," he said in a radio interview with 105.3 The Fan. "We're going to have to take shots and we're going to have to make contested plays."
The Horned Frogs will try to pull that off against a Wolverines unit tied for fourth in scoring defense, third in rushing defense and fifth in passing yards per attempt.
"I just think they're so well-coached and they play so well on both sides of the ball," Duggan said. "They fly around, they know what they want to do and they do it so well. It's going to make our job tough."
Dykes revived TCU's program in his first season as head coach. The Horned Frogs haven't even gone to a bowl game the past three seasons.
The Wolverines (13-0) have already set a school record for most victories in a season. They're looking to finish undefeated for the first time since 1997, when they won a share of the national championship. Back then, it was still decided by polls.
Michigan won't have its No. 1 running back, Blake Corum, who underwent knee surgery earlier this month. Donovan Edwards has proved to be much more than a capable backup.
Edwards rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns against arch-rival Ohio State, then posted 185 yards and a touchdown in the Big Ten championship against Purdue.
"You have to try to match their physicality," Dykes said. "You've got to play tough, You've got to be able to stop the run. Michigan is one of the few teams in college football that will run the ball no matter what."
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw for a combined six touchdowns against the Buckeyes and Boilermakers. He's only been intercepted three times.
"I don't think there's anyone better," Harbaugh said. "Our guy, he just never gets flustered

Ohio State's blueprint for winning the College Football Playoff championship will be staring the No. 4 Buckeyes in the face when they play No. 1 Georgia in a semifinal game at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Saturday.
The Buckeyes (11-1) are coming off a 45-23 thrashing by second-ranked Michigan on Nov. 26 in Columbus, Ohio, and are only in the playoffs thanks to Southern California losing to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game, enabling Ohio State to be awarded the final spot.
Critics would say the Buckeyes don't deserve a shot at the Bulldogs (13-0) after being manhandled by the Wolverines for the second year in a row.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day said his players understand their underdog role.
"I see a team that realizes that not a lot of people give us a chance," he said. "We know what we're in for, we know what the challenge is. Years and seasons and life doesn't always go the way you plan. It's about how you react to it and how you respond to it.
"As much as that (Michigan) loss hurts, we're not going to overreact on it. It's not worth it. We have a game against Georgia ahead of us that we're focusing on."
Day has never coached in the Peach Bowl, and he understands Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have the perceived "home" edge in Atlanta. Smart played in the Peach Bowl twice and has also been a coach in the game.
This is Georgia's second game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta this month. The Bulldogs whipped LSU, 50-30, on Dec. 3 to claim another SEC title.
All the Buckeyes wanted was another opportunity to redeem themselves, just as Georgia did a year ago. The Bulldogs lost 41-24 to Alabama in the 2021 SEC title game but as the No. 3 seed in the CFP downed No. 2 Michigan 34-11 before defeating No. 1 Alabama 33-18 for the national championship.
The Bulldogs have continued to dominate, beating LSU for their first conference crown since 2017.
"I feel like this year, coming off of a conference championship win we have worked harder than we did last year coming off of a loss," Georgia wide receiver Kearis Jackson said. "It's crazy because people may look at it as we're complacent, we're happy, it's just another box we wanted to check, one of our goals. Our season is not complete yet. We still have goals that we want to reach. The Peach Bowl is the next thing we want to accomplish."
The Bulldogs are second nationally in scoring defense (12.8) while the Buckeyes are 13th (19.2). Ohio State is second in scoring offense with 44.5 points a game compared to the Bulldogs' 11th (39.2) in a matchup of Heisman Trophy finalists.
Ohio State's C.J. Stroud led the nation in passer efficiency rating. He threw for 3,340 yards, 37 touchdowns and six interceptions but will be without receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and running back TreVeyon Henderson due to injuries.
Even so, Marvin Harrison Jr. had 72 receptions for 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns, and the Buckeyes have plenty of big-play ability.

"One of the most talented (receiver) groups we've faced," Smart said. "When you combine it with the talent of the quarterback, it really grows because he has the ability to get the ball to him all parts of the field -- vertically, horizontally, side to side."
Stetson Bennett returned for a chance to win another title. He powered Georgia's passing game with 3,425 yards, 20 TDs and six picks and is 27-3 as a starting quarterback. Bennett will look for Brock Bowers, the recipient of the John Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end.
"Obviously he's shown up big and that comes through in all the preparation that we do," Bowers said of Bennett. "It's his personality to show up in these bigger games and be able to perform on the biggest stages."
Ohio State, playing in the Peach Bowl for the first time, is 3-3 in four previous CFP appearances, having won the inaugural championship after the 2014 season and finishing runner-up to Alabama in 2020 the last time they made the playoffs.
In the Buckeyes' three wins they've averaged 44.3 points. In the losses they've averaged just 15.6.
Former Bulldogs coach Mark Richt, who was at the helm at Georgia for 15 seasons with six SEC division titles and a 145-41 record, will be honored with enshrinement to the Peach Bowl Hall of Fame along with former Miami (Fla.) playmaker Devin Hester.
Georgia is 3-1 in their two playoff appearances. In 2017, they lost to Alabama in the title game before last season's triumph over the Crimson Tide.
The winner Saturday plays either Michigan or TCU for the championship in Inglewood, Calif., on Jan. 9.

K State was the biggest need for the Wynn in Vegas today by FAR. Ticket count is approaching 4/1 and money is 5/1 on the Tide.

It's the biggest decision of this final college football Saturday. WynnBet customers are also pounding Alabama moneyline, so an outright K-State upset would be welcome behind the counter.
